De Grote Kerk

‘De Grote Kerk’ Freely translated as The Big Church is surely the main attraction of the historic city center of Dordrecht. You can see the imposing building from a large part of the city center and you probably also know the skyline photos of Dordrecht. There are even building regulations which prevent the building of highrise buildings. All this to keep the spotlights on De Grote Kerk, so it can keep stealing the show.

The church has existed for centuries and has a history that probably dates back to the year 1100. When you are visiting, keep in mind that on sundays the church is still in use for services. The entrance is not free, by the way. Inside you can admire various sights, such as the stained glass windows. Furthermore, there are regular exhibitions and expositions in the church and you can of course climb the tower (for a small fee). You have to do something for it, because you will have to walk about 275 steps, but once at the top you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city and the surrounding areas. For enthusiasts, guided tours of the church are given on Thursday and Saturday afternoons. For more information about this, we recommend that you take a look at the website. See the bottom of this page.

After your visit to the church, you can enjoy a cup of coffee, tea or soft drinks in De Schenkerij. They also have the famous Dordtse Schapekop biscuits here.
